Finding motivation: How to keep going even when times are tough – Jersey's Best



If there’s one thing I’ve come to learn, it’s this: Life isn’t always easy or fair. Oftentimes, it’s a matter of taking each day one at a time, and doing the best we can to live our lives to the fullest. In all honesty, though, it’s probably one of the hardest things to do. To keep trudging in spite of whatever is going on, in spite of the uncertainty.

Right now, we are all in the same boat. Working from home in less than optimal situations, in self-isolation, watching the news daily only to feel anxious and stressed. How do we get through this and live our best lives even when times are tough?

Here are a few tips that will help.

1. Take a step back and think of what you CAN do.
While it’s easy to get caught up in what’s going on, sometimes you just need to take a step back and re-analyze the situation. While many of us are home and in self-isolation with many things we can’t do, there are still many things we CAN do. Focus on those. Whether it’s being able to spend more time with family, get early workouts in from home — whatever it is — find something that you can do to make your situation better. Try not to paralyze yourself thinking about the things you can’t do.

2. Do “it.”
After you figure out what you can do, it’s time to do it. Take a walk, start that business, etc. even if you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry, you will figure it out as you go along. The smallest steps really do make the difference. Starting is the hardest part.

3. Stay connected.
Although we are all separated by 6 feet, we can still stay connected. We just need to be creative. Whether it’s waving to those across the street, FaceTiming with family, and/or messaging others on social media, try and stay connected as much as you can. It makes all the difference knowing that you are not alone.

4. Focus on the good ahead.
While this situation is less than optimal, it’s temporary. We will get through it one day at a time, yet, it often helps to focus on the good that lies ahead. Perhaps it’s a vacation, getting your hair done, celebrating a birthday, going shopping, think of one thing you want to do when this is done. And use it to stay positive.

5. Find motivational quotes and speakers.
As silly as it may sound, oftentimes reading a motivational quote, and/or listening to a motivational speaker on a podcast or social media can make all the difference by giving you a little bit of hope back that may have been lost.

6. When all else fails, take a break.
If you can’t get out of that “funk,” force yourself to take a break and to get out of your own head. Pampering yourself or working out is a start. Move around or take a bit of time off of doing work. Sounds counterproductive, right? Maybe, but if you don’t take that break, you will be staring at your to-do list without the motivation to start. So, it’s better to take an hour out of your day, and get back into it with a fresh head.

Situations like these can feel like it’s all just too much. Just push yourself to take a small step toward making the day better. You’ve got this. You are most definitely not alone.
