1. Stop thinking that you ‘should’ do something
It’s still January, and if you are struggling with motivation for your new-year resolve it is probably down to the way you are thinking about it.

“The moment we tell ourselves we ‘should’ do something is the moment we summon a desire to avoid doing it,” says Dr Jennifer Wild, a consultant clinical psychologist and associate professor at the University of Oxford, and the author of Be Extraordinary (£13.99, published on January 30 by Robinson). “Psychologists call this the ‘internalised critic’ and believe we are naturally primed to rebel like teenagers when we hear the word ‘should’.”
