EDINA, Mo. — Logan Miller keeps his state track and field championship goals quite simple.
Improve one year to the next.
“You don’t want to finish worse,” said Miller, a Knox County senior. “There’s only one place I can go and that’s up.”
One more step up the podium gets him to the top.
A year ago, Miller finished second in the discus and the shot put at the Class 1 meet. This year, with the championships set to get underway Friday at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City, Mo., Miller has the chance to repeat that performance and potential add a third medal to his haul.
He’s ranked second in both the discus and shot put and fourth in the javelin.
Miller won all three of those events at the sectional meet, giving him confidence he can repeat that at state.
“I feel like I’m throwing well,” Miller said. “I actually didn’t expect to have a good day (at sectionals) because it was rainy. I threw the shot really well and PR’d by 2 feet in javelin.”
He was most excited about his shot put effort, having struggled in the event part of the season.
“My coaches and I worked really hard to get my technique back down,” Miller said. “I wasn’t being explosive enough. It just took my coaches and I working on it for about two weeks. I think we’ve got it now.”
That showed at the sectional as he won with a toss of 47 feet, 9 1/4 inches. He won the discus at 140-6 and the javelin at 155-0.
“Everything just clicked,” Miller said. “That’s what it is supposed to feel like. That’s boosted my confidence for state.”
Miller’s drive to win state titles is two-fold. Doing so will also allow the Knox County track team to score points and contend for the team title.
The Eagles cruised to the sectional title with 107 points. Scotland County was second with 63.
Knox County scored the highest amount of points of the four sectional winners in Class 1.
“We set that goal even before the season began,” Miller said. “We’re pushing together in the weight room and in conditioning. We know we have a really good shot of bringing back some hardware for the school.
“We did it at districts. We did it at sectionals. We just know we’ll try our hardest to do it.”
