Gen Xers remember when the Internet came in the form of an AOL CD-ROM that came in the mail. Millennials will remember when they finally got to sign up for Facebook. And Gen Z can’t even remember a time before the Internet. In just a few short decades, the Internet has completely changed the way we interact with the world. That’s true in our personal lives, our romantic lives, and our professional lives.
Since digital advertising is so prevalent today, the marketing sector pays close attention to emerging trends. It’s early in 2019, but there are already plenty of new innovations, systems, and ideas that are shaping the future of the Internet.
If you run a business, here are some of the online marketing trends you’ll need to know this year:
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Chatbots, and Video
AI and Chatbots only existed in science fiction novels until recently, and even though video has been around for many years, it’s only recently become a major component of online advertising. Jared Schweers, owner of web and graphic design company Key Element Media, believes these two trends will be hugely important this year.
“The use of Artificial Intelligence, Chatbots, and Video in 2019 will really change how some businesses operate,” said Schweers. “For example, bidding and ad placement can be completed via artificial intelligence. Chatbots are going to change how customer service is performed and experienced by users. Video isn’t a new topic for digital marketing, but I think it will be a 2019 digital marketing trend. Many businesses haven’t engaged in video and the benefits are huge.”
As far as video marketing is concerned, here are some key statistics that showcase its promise for 2019:
- 82% of all online traffic will be related to videos by 2021
- 72% of consumers say they have shared a branded video
- 52% of consumers say they feel more comfortable purchasing a product after watching a video about that product
Voice search deserves its own category because of how popular this technology is likely to become.
“As Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Siri continue to become more sophisticated and more widely used, voice search will be an even bigger marketing trend in 2019,” added Lauren Walter, Content Strategist at Online Optimism. “Businesses should start optimizing for voice search now to stay ahead of the curve.”
Artificial intelligence, voice search programs, and improved video tech will surely revolutionize the way digital marketing is handled in the near future, but there are many more trends that will significantly impact the ecommerce world. Here are some of the additional digital marketing trends to keep an eye out for throughout 2019 and beyond:
- Omnichannel Marketing
- Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
- Augmented Reality
- Native Advertising
- Influencer Marketing
- Email and Marketing Automation
- User-Generated Content
- Social Messaging Apps
- Visual Search
As digital marketers utilize more and more innovative forms of tech throughout 2019, there is one thing that is for sure: the present and future for digital marketing is very promising.
